I've read some excerpts of Alter's work. I think it reflects the original hebrew much more closely than any other translation. If at times it feels forced, or halting, it is indeed because of his faithfulness to the original text. English translation has sufferred from the beauty and grandiosity of the KJV. While the latter engages in some wonderful pompous exultation, it fails miserably to reflect the true beauty of Tehillim. I hope to read more of Alter, if someone will do it better from now, it will be because of his foundation.
