On the eve of Nissan 28, 5751 (April 11, 1991), the Lubavitcher Rebbe issued an emotional call to his followers, and to the world Jewish community, to increase their efforts to bring Moshiach and the ultimate redemption. Spoken in an anguished voice and couched in uncharacteristically personal terms, the Rebbe's words deeply shocked the Chassidim present in the Rebbe's synagogue and reverberated worldwide. "How is it that the Redemption has not yet been attained?" the Rebbe cried. "That despite all that has transpired and all that has been done, Moshiach has still not come? What more can I do? I have done all I can to bring the world to truly demand and clamor for the Redemption...The only thing that remains for me to do is to give over the matter to you. Do all that is in your power to achieve this thing--a most sublime and transcendent light that needs to be brought down into our world with pragmatic tools... I have done all I can. I give it over to you. Do all that you can to bring the righteous redeemer, immediately! I have done my part. From this point on, all is in your hands..."

This impassioned call must be understood on a deeper level on the background of what Chabad chassidus about this matter.
The operative phrase that the Rebbe employed was that the avodah should be done in a manner of "Oros D'tohu" in the "Kelim D'tikkun". These advanced Kabbalistic terms have been expressed in and explicated in various ways.
If you compare the flowery free-translation from chabad.org with the original Hebrew text, the artfulness and flowery expressions of the translation become apparent. Over the years, translations have manipulated and re-defined the message. Some explicators have emphasized the “oros d'tohu”

While others focused on the concept of “Kelim D’Tikkun”.

Rav Yitzhak Ginsburgh of Gal Einai published (not sure if still sold) a Hebrew pamplet and English tapes "Lights and Vessels" where he wrote on the theme of showing how each sefira can be approached by balancing the manner of tohu as well as via a manner of tikkun.
It should be appreciated that the terminology the Rebbe used was not new and can be found in the mamarim of all the Chabad Rebbeim and ultimately stems form the teachings of the Arizal. Let us try to trace it so as to understand it.
The Alte Rebbe uses the expression in Torah Ohr at least twice: daf 25 to explain how Yaakov crossed the River Yabok and daf 52 where Moshe says this ability to unite the "Oros D'tohu" in the "kelim D'tikkun" is the specific ability of Moshiach. However, not only the Moschiach has this ability. The Rebbe (Toras Menachem 14, 109) says Avraham also was involved in this type of avodah as well as he was born during the first 2000 years of the world, the years of Tohu but served HaShem in the second 2000 years, the period of Torah/Tikkun. The Rebbe Maharash (5633A p.130 / 5633b p.607) appends the avodah in Egypt to this concepts and points out that Yosef who is akin to the 8th king of Tohu Hadar had this capacity as well. Tzemach Tzedek's in Ohr HaTorah Vayikra p.453 based on Shelah and Avodas haKodesh, asks the famous question which we posted about once before (here) and the answer is that the whole world is an Egypt in which one must perform this avodah of “Oros D’Tohu in keilim of Tikkun”. We can add that the Previous Rebbe, Yosef Yitzhak also states (5709 p.56-59) that Yisro also rose to tis level of Divine Service. There are other references (Ohr Hatorah Chukas-p.882, 5702 p.47, 5688 p.101, Toras Chaim Beshalach 249b, Pelech Rimon- Vaera Shemos p.46, Vayikra p 457,546, Toras Menachem 20,188)as well but probably the most relevant to the today;s situation is Likutei Sichos volume 35 in Vayera about the people of Sodom, pointing out based on the above cited passage in Torah Ohr, Rebbe Akiva epitomized this avodah as well with his "Love your Neighbor as yourself" (may we all rise to this level).
Lofty concepts require serious study and exertion to become clear and well defined. Unfortunately, many people speak on these topics, but without having done the hard work of deeply investigating these profound concepts, trivializing them by treating them as slogans and trite buzzwords. Detractors, direct their efforts to criticizing fringe groups and do not take the time to study, appreciate and apply what the Rebbe actually said. "Oros D'tohu" in the "kelim D'tikkun" is about Ahvas Yisroel. It is about sublimating negative attitudes to make a dwelling place for HaShem in this world. It is not about one group of Jews mocking those of another derech. In this period of Sefira we must remember that Rebbe Akiva's first set of students criticized their fellows and they all died. Each one saw his own perceptions as the correct ones and those of his fellows as wrong. As talmidei chochomim they should have applied themselves to understanding the others and not to attacking them. When they did not do so, they were became unworthy of passing their Torah to the next generation.
