* This reminds me of what I saw in this week's Mishapacha, in the interview with Chazan Helfgot. He says that there were many G-d fearing cantors in the early years of last century but they are now forgotten because they left no recordings. Why not? Apparently they, as a group, made a cherem that they should not record their melodies because so many Jews would come home after a full workday on Shabbos, and then, to assuage their pained souls, would put on a recording of Chazzonus to, in some way, feel connected to the Shabbos feeling. For this reason, so many of the frum chazzonim left behind no recordings.
