yitz..

Couldn't Rebi also base his opinion on the fact that since the date of each occurrence in the first case has been made clear, it doesn't count as a proof of "ain mukdam u'meuchar"? Perhaps the date is given specifically to alert the reader to the fact that it is out of order.

Also, interesting why Rebi doesn't go with the comment about the Gid haNasheh (Genesis 32:33) when Yaakov was injured by the angel--but I guess that "ad hayom hazeh" can be explained away as referring to (until) the time when the Torah was given/written. (ie. Hayom hazeh) Although, according to the way you would like to read Rebi, he should have used this passuk. (Alternately the passukim about Moav and Amon that include the phrase "Ad Hayom HaZeh" (end of Genesis 19:37-38) seem similarly nararrator-y)

Clearly there's some importance in Rebi's choice regarding a fact that happens AFTER the end of the Torah itself. (that the manna ceased to fall when they entered the land--something they didn't do in Torah)

Thank you. It may be that 'ad hayom hazeh' is an idiomatic exression that means "always". (It does not mean that it is written after the events). As such, it is not suitable for the kind of derasha that Rebbi wants to make.
